Core Allowances & Calculation Formulas Explained
Your gross salary is computed on the basis of official allowances set by the Ministry of Finance. Below is the formula layout for each allowance component:
📈 Dearness Allowance (DA)
DA is updated twice a year by the government to compensate for inflation. In 2026, DA is calculated at 60% of the baseline Basic Pay.
🏠 House Rent Allowance (HRA)
HRA is allocated according to city classifications to compensate for accommodation rental. As the DA rate has reached 60%, HRA stands at:
• Class X Cities (Metros): 30% of Basic Pay (e.g. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru).
• Class Y Cities (Tiers): 20% of Basic Pay (e.g. Pune, Lucknow, Patna).
• Class Z Cities (Small/Rural): 10% of Basic Pay (any remaining region).
🚗 Transport Allowance (TA)
Allocated to compensate for commuting charges. Under 7th CPC guidelines, TA has baseline scales:
• Pay Level 6 to 8: ₹3,600 (Class X) / ₹1,800 (Class Y/Z).
• Pay Level 4 to 5: ₹3,600 (Class X) / ₹1,800 (Class Y/Z).
In addition to the baseline, candidates receive **DA on TA** (at the current 60% rate). Formula: `TA_Effective = TA_Base + (TA_Base * DA%)`.
